Best prescription sunglasses 2022: From designer lenses to affordable lenses

As a glasses wearer, it can be quite stressful to buy regular glasses, try on hundreds of frames but somehow none of them look perfect. So, when summer comes, the dread of searching for prescription sunglasses kicks in. However, with the rise of online eyewear stores, finding your perfect summer frame has never been easier.

We caught up with Tom Broughton, founder of modern eyewear maker Cubitts, to hear his top tips for us prescription sunglass wearers:

  1. In terms of style, consider that sunglasses can be slightly more oversized than eyeglasses. That said, you still need to make sure the frame fits your nose and ears snugly to prevent them from slipping off in the heat.
  2. When buying online, ask yourself if they will usually cover your hairline. Also consider the pantoscopic field of view – how big you want the lens to be and how much of your peripheral vision you want to cover. To maximize coverage, you can opt for aviator or pilot style sunglasses.
  3. As a general rule, opt for a frame with the opposite characteristics to your face. For example, if you have a round face, an angular frame might work for you. Also think about your facial features. Is one eye higher than the other? If so, avoid small lenses or heavy, dark frames. Do you have heavy features? If so, you can look for a rounded lens with a thin frame (a metal rim can help soften heavy facial features).

Remember that sunglasses offer more than just a fashion statement. Tom reminds us that “when buying sunglasses, the main thing to think about is the level of UV protection. To prevent your eyes from being damaged by the sun’s rays, always look for UV380 or higher. The level of sun absorption is also a key factor in protecting your eyes. Look for 85% or more to be effective in blocking sunlight and preventing UV rays from reaching your eyes.”

Understanding Prescription Sunglasses

If you’re not sure what type of coating or sunglasses you need, see a helpful explanation from Dan McGhee, Director of Optical Services at Vision Express below:

Polarized – When visible light scattered by the sun encounters a horizontal surface, such as a road or water, much of it is reflected, causing white glare which can reduce visibility and cause eye strain. Polarized lenses filter out these reflections, allowing you to see more clearly in situations where glare can be a problem or even dangerous, such as when driving.

Mirror – As well as having a distinctive and fashionable look, mirrored sunglass lenses dramatically reduce the amount of light entering the eye, making them ideal for people who are sensitive to sunlight. They also reduce glare from surfaces, including snow and ice, and are therefore particularly beneficial if you participate in water sports or high altitude outdoor activities, such as skiing or snowboarding.

Anti-UV coating – If you add a colored tint to your lenses, we also recommend UV coating, which will protect your eyes from the sun; prolonged exposure to which could eventually damage the retina and lead to cataracts. A UV coating added to clear lenses can give you the same protection as sunglasses, without changing the color.

Tints and coatings – Whether for function or fashion, adding a colored tint to solid lenses can help reduce eye strain and glare, protect against potentially harmful UV rays, and increase visual perception by improving contrast and improving depth perception.

Adaptive lenses – Automatically adjusting according to the level of natural light, adaptive lenses allow you to see comfortably in all conditions, without the need to change glasses. This makes them ideal for people with light-sensitive eyes or those with an active outdoor lifestyle.
